But your sig reveals that you didn't buy an m3 - you bought a 530 - why?

The m3 is VERY pricey, they wanted so much for it per month so I opted for 530. If I had the chance I would have LOVED to have a red on red M3 smg coupe. MmmMmmmm

The styling is a bit old compared to the E60 but if you can get past that and focus on the driving experience then its an amazing driving machine.

the m3 looks will never become dated IMO... this is simply one of the best bmw designs ever made, and the e60 , the e90 all pale in comparison .. (not the 6 series though )... i think its a classic and will keep its good lucks even when its replaced by the e92 m3.

And BTW needforspeed the lease bmw we have is the older 218bhp 530d, and it feels so much slower everytime i drive it... there is just no comparison to be honest. At least the 745li is there to redeem some of BMW's pride

Based on your 21 vs 29 mpg and petrol @ ?0.849 per litre vs diesel @ ?0.889 per litre, the extra cost for running the petrol would be ?444.69 over 10,000 miles. I think that's a small price to pay for the refinement of a petrol engine.

AND using the offical mpg figures from www.bmw.co.uk for a 530i (32.1) vs 530d (42.2), the difference is only ?244.89 over 10,000 miles.
42.2 mpg LOL

I average 27.7 on mixed driving in a 530D, and I most certainly do not give it much stick. I would be VERY surprised if I got more then 20mpg out of a 530i, probably less. I do close on 18,000 miles per year and the residuals of the diesel are much peter than the petrol.

Premium Diesel her is 99.9 p/l, premium unleaded 93p/l in Wiltshire.

Irrespective of the sums, the sheer grunt of the diesel through the rev range makes it a far less demanding car to drive than the 530i. whilst the petrol is a little more refined evry chioce is a compromise and the petrol just does not have the grunt for me at mid-range.

Oh - when you put it like that - the 530d does make sense - I couldn't live with 10mpg when its ?5 a gallon.

Unfortunately - I do in fact have the old m57 engine with 218 bhp.

I totally agree on the looks of the m3 - it's an amazingly cool car and it WILL NOT date.

I take it you are not in London right now !

Anyway I've still got 500nm of torque to play with.

What are your observations regarding differences between the 235 / 218 bhp engines as far as I understand it the main difference is the injection system.

Ok - The new engine is 0.3 of a sec faster to 60 than the old, but does it really FEEL that much different?

(I test drove both and they both seemed to have lots of urge)

Well almost:

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuel/

Average UK price at the moment is 94.1 p a litre or ?4.28 a gallon for standard deisel (it actually COSTS just 29p a litre with the rest being profit and tax).

I had to full up at a motorway service station yesterday and bought the premium deisel at 1.01 a litre or ?4.59 a gallon.

I believe US gallons are different - as are US fuel prices, which is why you haven't got BMW diesels
