Go test drive an M3 for an hour. Or better yet, go borrow a friends for a day. Get the "gotta go fast" out of your system. Go back to your car and then you'll appreciate it for what it is.

Sounds to me like you should have bought an M5, not an M3. At least the 550.

If you are so into high performance why'd you buy a 530, diesel no less?

I've had my 530d about 3 weeks now.

Out of nowhere today I started to think about my previous car (e46 coupe) and began to daydream about buying an m3.

I've just been scanning the net and a used '53 m3 is about the same price as my '04 530d

The 530d was MEANT to be a quick, comfortable mile eating machine.

At the moment though I (bizzarely) seem to have this hankering for something more extreme.

Can someone please persuade me that I have done the right thing and that an M3 would not be a good idea I drive about 30,000 miles per year
I can't pursuade you that you made the right choice. I also thought i should have gotten the m3 but in a way logic and brains dictated over heart. Resale value is way higher in the e60, more practical, better fuel consumption, looks better and...but in the end an M remains an M. After all i'm glad i didn't but it since the new m3 is a few steps away. It will soon be here and if i would have chose the e46 m3 i wouldn't have been very please with that. If all goes well after the lease is over (2 years+ from now) i will stay in the bmw family and aim for the e90 m3, since i don't need too much the extra space the e60 gives me (60% i drive alone and 35% i drive with another person) sooo either will aim for the m3 or for the porsche carrera be it a turbo (i'd wish) or a gt3. I for one, reached my cars limits...in both straight line performance and also cornering performance, and even though it's m packed sometimes it really shows it's a 1800kilos pig. The best way it would be to keep the e60 and buy the gt3 as a hardcore car. But we are talking already about big $.
Cheers.

The diesel 530 is within a few 10th of the 530i on performance and kicks it's butt for sustained power though 30 - 80 mph.

Plus if you had to pay $8+ a gallon for gas you would understand why 29mpg is so much more attractive than 21mpg.

So, need for speed,

with a name like that, you?re only thinking about getting an m3 vs. a 530D ? You should have!

Honestly, what are You trying to sell? That You?re a hardcore sports driver, forced into buying a family car?

M3(coupe) and any E60 are two different sides of the cantina, serving completely different needs (and age groups). Hello everybody, looking at it from many angles, the E60 is a very good car, but its no sports car!

By the way, I actually did own a M3(E36) (I was 33 then)

I owned an e46M3 for 3 years. It was a great car, but as my wife complained, about as comfortable as a stagecoach. When I first bought my 550i I was a little dissappointed in the handling. It seemed to lack steering feel, that feeling that it will go wherever you point it no questions asked. Well, you know what? I just regained that feeling in my 550 by putting on 166 rims with Michelin PS2 tires. The runflats are what made the steering seem like a Buick. I now truly love the 550! Fast, comfortable, filled with goodies like Sirius, Nav., Bluetooth, etc., and last but not least handles like a BMW.

Is that such a big, feelable difference? Enough to stay away for a while?
