Hi Guys, I took my wife up to Lake Arrowhead Resort for a little vacation. Today on the way down the hill, I put the shift lever in to steptronic mode and slowly went from 6th, to 5th and then 4th as I gently braked and then all of a sudden I heard a "Clunk" and it went in to third gear. ( We have had a cabin up the mountain for years, I know the roads and often downshift when following scared, insecure drivers to back off and not ride my brakes until I can pass them.) Then the wonderful info display said " Transmission gear failure." I immediately put it back in drive and it wouldnt come out of third gear. I limped the car home going on side streets so as not to run it on the freeway at constant high revs. (4,000 plus at 58 mph) I always stay on top of my maintenance, so the tranny fluid was changed at 60,000 miles. (I just hit 100,000 miles) When I got home, I shut the car off, restarted it, and the "Failure" light stayed off. I drove it around the neighborhood and on the highway and it shifted fine. I have heard horror stories of people having to spend as much as $7000.00 at the STEALERSHIPS to replace the trans. Any thoughts, any local So Cal OC area repair shops that you have used??? I love the car and was hoping to go without a new car payment for a bit longer before we upgrade to a newer BMW. HELP! Thanks, Brad

I have to call my dad for the number but there is a place sw of 5 and Lincoln that did a great job on my dad's car and I would not hesitate to take mine there if I had to. They were doing a older land rover (2004) and that thing has the same tranny as the E60.

sometimes if a transmission fault pops up, it wont go away until you shut off the car and restart. i'd just continue to drive it to see if it occurs again.
i would at least check the fluid level or maybe do a drain and fill while you're at it.

You are right! I wish I would have known that! I didnt want to risk stranding my family so I drove home in limp mode. I shut it off when I got home, waited a couple of minutes, the fault code was gone, and for now, it seems normal....... I am going to change the fluid and filter and see what happens! Thanks a lot guys for your thoughts! I really appreciate it, Brad
