Do a search for BMS Powerbox it transformed my 525xi for $300. Exhaust, filter and RPI scoops will help also.

ESS Normal Aspiration optimized ECU software is a result of 100's of dyno runs and exact calibration of all parameters to allow maximum performance gains with improved driveability/fuel consumption and stock engine longevity. RPM limit is increased to 6700RPM , and top speed governor is removed.

Throttle response programming is greatly improved over stock.

Power is increased.

Depends on the year, they don't make one for the M54 engines, just the N62 (2006-07) cars. I checked, because $279 for a tune is pretty damn cheap and Berger has a good rep. Unfortunately, they don't make a tune for my car so ESS it is for me

What I've "heard" about OEtuning is that they make good power in the beginning, but the tune disappears and the DME goes back to stock. Not sure because I haven't tuned a car using OEt...so I can't say for sure.

I"m going to take a different approach ... instead of emptying your pockets looking for a few extra HP from your 525 ... sell it to someone whose needs are more modest and find yourself a clean pre-owned 530, 535 or 545/550. You might (not knowing the year or equipment on your 525) find yourself dropping back a year or two to pull that off but in my opinion if you're looking for the HP that might be the sure fire way to do it.

so ESS and BMS powerbox are the same thing? i have heard the BMS is actually not good for your car. i don't know where i heard that and it wasn't really all that validated i remember, but i figured someone can give me a better explanation as to whether it is safe.

also, could you do it and still have warranty coverage, would the dealer know?

Cheapest way is to glue a 550i name tag to the trunk.

You will fool almost everyone in the world except the guy passing you. Might even fool yourself if you are persistent.
