HELP - Gas smell stinking up garage - 1st BMW

New to the Bimmer world. Love my car but I've only had it a few weeks and its been stinking up the garage with a strong gas smell. I'm not very mechanically inclined but I'm certain its my car because there's nothing else in my garage. I have a 2009 528i with about 98k miles. Any advice will be very much appreciated.

any gas on the floor?

Nope. No gas spots that I have been able to find.

I have the same issue, I took it to BMW and they couldn't find anything of course. They said they couldn't smell anything and looked at me like I'm crazy but I said you are in a open bay garage...I hope you have better luck than I and keep searching as well.

If I were you, I'd check the following places - fuel line connection under the hood near the injector rail, around the gas cap (after opening the fuel door), remove the rear seat, remove the cover plates on both sides (fuel pump and fuel filter) and see if there is any fuel leak.

The first I'd suspect is that someone topped off the gas tank at a recent fill-up. BMWs DO NOT LIKE THAT!! Stop as soon as the pump handle clicks off. Otherwise raw gasoline gets in to the emission control thingies and they may be the source of the smell.

Remember, gasoline evaporates very quickly but the smell can linger for days so finding a liquid trail is going to be tough. However, it does stain. Look in all the logical places - fuel system connectors, hoses, etc. for any trail a leak might have left behind.

There is a drain located in the gas filler area ... check to see if anything has plugged it - leaves, bugs, etc. Last shot might be to get to a car wash that (also) cleans the underside of a car with high pressure sprays.

Check out this previous post. I had the strong smell of fuel in my garage as well and never saw any leaks on the floor either.

Just had the same thing on my '07 530i. Turned out to be the connection from the fuel filter was cracked. Ordered a new filter and line (just in case it was the seal inside the fuel line coming out of the filter). Good as new with no leaks or gas smell.
