Need help???? What is the normal operating temp. on the E60? my 530 seems to run hot and stays consistent between 205 degrees & 220 deg on noraml driving and goes down at 190 deg at the lowest when on idle parked with the fan running.
Is it running hot? what temp does the thermostat open? I have been monitoring my engine temp the last couple days using my scan tool live data while driving.
Is this normal operating temp on the E60??? no warning signs on idrive. Please help. Newbie on the E60's

that sounds about right, most cars operate near the boiling point of water.

how are you reading the temp? i wish i could see my temp and oil pressure and that the idrive had a screen that shows all the engine vitals that the engineers decided we did not need to know.

it would be nice to have a steering wheel button programmed for that.

Im currently using my scan tool live data and have it plug in the obd port for a couple days now while driving trying to monitor the coolant temp.
BMW is suppose to have excellent cooling system and was concern since its running 210*F+ on a 80 degree weather in CA with or without A/C.
On idle and parked with the fan running it goes down to 190*F.

Can anyone confirm the thermostat operating temp? Open at certain temp?

best way to tell is buy a thermostat, drop it in some hot water with a thermometer and watch it work, you'll see the spring deflect, although you won't be able to get above 100c or so depending on your elevation . might even be able to buy a cheap aftermarket one if they exist for e60's and do the same.

my old z32 service manual actually had a pic and description of this test, so funny, you would never see that in a bmw service manual.....that TIS one i bought on ebay is pathetically vague compared to japanese manuals. the japanese ones even show you how to rebuild the starter, alternator, ps pump, etc. TIS goes like this...remove engine...repair engine...replace engine in reverse order..... :wow:

Didn't you post this same question earlier today?

Looks like different members are answering on both posts...

i just changed the water pump and thermostat on my 550i, and the thermostat had 105 celsius scribed on it...which equals 221F.

your situation sounds normal.
