Help - Diesel Soot in engine bay
#1
Hi - I've just been checking the washer level on my 530d (2004, 218 bhp) and I noticed that the exhaust side of the engine bay is black with soot. Also, if I let it idle and than floor the throttle, there is a puff of diesel smoke, although I can't see where it's coming from. The car has 70k miles on and is totally standard. It seems to be running ok, although I had thought it was a little (very little) down on power recently (service due) I can hear a 'tick' from somewhere (like a cracked exhaust) at tickover.
From what I can see of the turbo and exhaust, there doesn't seem to be any cracks, if anything, the highest concentration of soot is around the feed pipe from the turbo to the intercooler.
Anyone else had this and any ideas as to what might be wrong?? Ta. Alan

Hmmm
I really don't know the reason, but I can tell you this.
I am the second owner of my current 530D 2004 and when I was buying the car I was told that the dealer had changed the exhaust manifold and turbo after 27000 kms. The dealer told that there had not been any defects in these parts back then, but the manufacturer had told them to do it. I called the previous owner and he confirmed this was true.
I don't know if there has been some common issue with turbos or exhaust manifolds with 2003-2004 e60's, but I guess you're having an issue with one of these two parts. I hope you work it out!

Had the car to the dealer, and they have diagnosed a cracked exhaust manifold and would like a mere ?700 to fix/replace.
Anyone else had problems, please!! - I would like to get BMW to pay soemthing towards it, only two months out of warranty and with 70k miles, this isn't impressive!
Cheers
