Just finished detailing my car and noticed that the front headlight on the drivers side, and the rear taillight on the drivers side are both on. Drivers side only. I've checked the lights, and they're off. What does that mean...?

Check the turn signal lever. I think you activated the European parking lights that light up one side of the lights when the turn signal lever is clicked on with the car off.

Thanks. I got it to turn off by clicking the lever.

How do I turn off the European lights option?

Clears when you restart the car. You must have accidently bumped the stalk as you were getting out of the car.

I don't think you can disable this option via iDrive, maybe the dealer can.

Depending on the CIP version you can disable Daytime Running Lights in the iDrive.

No, this isn't the same thing as DRLs.

This option is the "roadside parking lamps". It will only come on if you hold the turn signal stalk to the left or the right with the ignition set to off.

It is helpful if you park on the side of the road.

BEWARE - this function is a priority power consumer and WILL DRAIN YOUR BATTERY!

Odd, I didn't think they had that feature in US model cars anymore. I see other Euro marques riding around with one or two extra bright tailights and know that they have their fog lamps on. Do our tail lights glow brighter when our fogs are on?

I first discovered that left side lighting way back in 1971 on my first 2002, which by the way, took a lot of getting-used to, as the trun signal was on the RIGHT side of the column, and headlight highbeam stalk was on left. Our Feds nixed that a couple years later and I always assumed that the parking lamp deal went with it. Thanks for that um, well, "flashback!"

Those "extra bright taillights" are actually dedicated rear foglamps. We generally get cars with front fogs and rear fogs pretty much as standard, even the E60 - my car has a switch for front fogs and a separate second switch for rear fogs. And Ron is right - they have nothing to do with DRLs. Here's the extract from the user handbook:
