I'm having the same problem too (05 530i with 80k). I already ruled out the battery. I jumped the starter and all i hear is the solenoid clicking. I'm going to take the starter apart and bench test it when i get out of class.
ok let me know what happens.. ill let u know what the dealer tells me... its been there for 2 days.. still didnt find out what the problem is

I ended up just replacing the entire starter since the solenoid was a special order part. I paid $168 otd for a bosch starter. The oem unit was denso. The bosch is a little bigger and cranks a little faster then the denso did when it was working. The starter can be replaced from the top of the car. The easiest way to do it is from the top (after removing all the filter covers and stress bar) useing a 3/8" wrench connected to a breaker bar to get it loose, then a ratcheting 10mm wrench to back it completely out. I spent the majority of the day trying to figure out the easiest way since the top bolt is so close to the firewall. Now that i've done it once i'm sure i could do it in about 3-4 hours with a lot of cursing.

The starter is located on the drivers side underneath the intake manifold. Follow the battery cable furthest from the firewall from the remote jumper post.

try BMAPARTS.COM its $161 for the m54, $128 for the N52, and $207 for the N62 with free shipping. You get 5% off if you put spece30 or spec30 in the coupon area. Did you follow the power cable? The only thing you can see from up top is the solenoid which is where you need to jump it from to bypass the ignition switch. Use a small screwdriver to touch the power terminal with the small terminal with the small white wire attached to it. Since you in LA check these guys out. They are right next to where La Cienega and Fairfax come together. Either myself or my father can come to where the car is and install it for $200.
