Ever since I brought my car to the dealer to have the steering angle sensors replaced (thus far the only downside to the active steering option), there has been this annoying rattle that I thought was coming from the steering column. Well, today, I was using the turning stalk and noticed the same rattle. I finally narrowed it down to the "check" button on the left steering stalk. Although it works fine, it's loose and rattles whenever there's a slight vibration or if I tap it, unlike the BC button underneath it. Does anyone know if the button can separate from the stalk and be replaced/greased and reinserted, or is the button and stalk all one piece? Thanks!

This thing drove me nuts for 6 months. Then I took advice and sprayed a bit of BMW's rubber treatment on the switch. It's been another 6 months I reckon and I haven't heard a single rattle since then. So save yourself the trouble; don't take anything apart or try to wedge anything in the gap. The spray works wonders and if you don't have it, I bet silicone spray will do the same job. If you have neither, go buy the rubber spray from a dealer and give the door weatherstrips a good helping while you're at it. Your car will love you for it.

After a bit of searching, turns out this is a somewhat common problem on the e60. I ended up sliding a tiny piece of black electrical tape in the crevice between the bottom of the check button and top of the turn stalk, with sticky side down. I found this out from this link: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...-rattle-3.html . The real solution however is for BMW to replace the entire stalk. I might bring this up when I go in for my next service. For now though, the cabin is as quiet as can be.

You drive a 2008 E60, so it's still under warranty, tell the dealer to fix (replace) it!
