Hey guys, new guy on the forum. I just purchased a 2004 545i and I have a few questions I hope you guys can answer.

One thing that I find alarming is when I pop the trunk on the car.. the trunk lid violently swings up and bounces, causing the whole car to move. Is this normal? This is my first bmw and I'm not sure if this is normal, or is something wrong with the trunk release springs.
Also, I noticed that the headlights have quite alot of dust/dirt on the back of the housing. Is it possible to clean it?

Thanks everyone!

Welcome! That is normal, the trunk opens very quickly. Don't stand too close when opening!!

And can you clarify back of the headlight housing? Do you mean inside the unit?

My trunk doesn't open as fast as you describe and it certainly does not bounce or rock the car. It opens relatively quickly but actually slows in the last 6 inches or so under some sort of hydraulic pressure (if you listen you can hear the slight hiss).

Not sure on the lights.

You may not want to mess with it but if you do, you might want to look at the following:

There is a tension adjustment that might allow you to make it open with a bit less spring...

Thanks for all the quick reply guys!

Yes, the trunk does open that violently, it literaly slams against itself, bounces back and forth 3 times; causing the whole car to rock. I find this strange and it is hard to close. But I will bring it to my local bmw tomorow and see what they can do.

Regarding the headlight, it's behind the clear plastic. I'm also just going to ask bmw if they can clean it.

Thanks again guys.

Yeah the trunk does have some power to it!! I'm forever concerned my wife or kids will lean in just a bit too much and get knocked silly!!
