Is the clutch exactly the same in the sport package as it is in the non-sport package on the 545? I mena this in terms of how heavy it is.

Thankss.

Within the various models and tranny choices, I am pretty sure that the drivetrains are identical between sport and non-sport.

The manual transmission 545 in US can only be purchased with the sports package. It is not available without the sports package. The clutch in the 545 is not heavy. You can improve the clutch uptake by modifying the clutch delay valve
which is a simple process.

They changed that for MY2005, you can get a non-sport 545 6-speed manual.

I was hoping that it was the case that the clutch was not heavy, as the cluth in the m3 is pretty heavy and tough to go through traffic daily.

The clutch is not bad, I hadn't driven a standard in a long time and I got used to it pretty quick, even in traffic.

My only cpmplaint about the clutch in the 5er is the damn CDV that BMW installs to "smooth out" the shifts. It makes the engagement very vague, since the clutch plate disengages from the flywheel much slower than without the CDV.

Check some of these threads out:
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=1435&hl=cdv
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=...1&st=&p=&#entry

to learn a little more about the CDV in action.

I am also looking to install some sort of clutch stop to restrict clutch travel since the engagement zone is so high.
