Wow, well I have an 04 545i and had the same thing happen, although mine was burning up on seat back on the left "kidney/lowerback" portion of the seat. I guess it was on the lower left 'wing' of the sport seat. I just got the car in October and had it replaced in November.

Mine was part of the recall so it was fixed. BMWNA told me mine had actually already been serviced for the recall once... whatever, but anyhow they sent me to the dealer to have it checked out. It was promptly replaced, and after some haggling, they even threw in a new leather seat cover for the seat bottom to match the new cover for the seat back.

It certainly sounds like the same problem, albeit different area of the seat... Hard to believe they won't file that under the recall. It's a safety hazard if nothing else.
I totally agree - I guess there sales are down like everyone else. Thanks for the info.

I have a 2004 545I Dinan 5. My driver's side heated seat has small dime size size brown spot on the left leg between the hip & knee that gets really hot and is burning...so I don't use it anymore.
Have you considered going into the iDrive climate menu and adjusting the seat heating so that all of it goes to the back? By doing that, you're avoiding giving any power/heat to the part on the base, and you're still getting the most important part of seat heating (IMHO) which is the back. I have mine set to 80% back/20% butt even without a problem.

Also, anyone - does it help to avoid these problems keeping the seat heating set to 1 light? I usually use all 3 lights (full heating power) for the first 20 minutes of driving when it's really cold.

Great Point - I'll take your advice and plug it in - Makes good sense to me. As far as you question goes - I feel you should be able to leave on all 3 lights and not have the problem with burning your seat - BMW probably fixed this after the recall - but doesn't help me.
Thanks!

I have the same problem with my driver's seat except there's no any burn marks (yet). But if I keep the seat heating on too long I can smell it.

I think getting in/out the car has broken the element during time. And I'm wondering how to fix it.
