My comment was actually that i don't 'need' hud to enjoy my car or to get the most out of it, and the reference to the diesel was that it was implied that a car could only be being driven well at speed if it was being 'redlined' - something you dont need to do in a diesel and also i dont find i need to do in our other car a 3.0Si Z4 Coupe.

I personally cant see a dealer adding on as much as ?1500 for NAV, i think he is trying to 'sell' you the media pack next time round. I guess it depends on the age of your car now though - the new it is, the more impact it will have on price....

Also i think leather is probably not a 'must have' on say the likes of a 520d, but yes on a 530d it would be pretty much essential.
Another point to make is one mans perfect option is another man's worst nightmare.

I know of at least one freak or unique that won't buy a car with leather seats in it because he's vegitatian.

So , for every spec , there is someone out there somewhere waiting to buy it.

Relax a bit guys, no one is buying options they think the next buyer will want. I don't see what's wrong with knowing what the approx net cost of a particular option will be over the period you own a car.

The person I spoke to is actually a friend of many years, long before he worked at BMW, we were out to lunch and he was just giving me an honest approx value of my car and what it might be worth in a year's time (when I plan to change).

So I'll start again, if BT costs ?500 and I'm buying it anyways then the nav option is costing an extra ?1800, now if when the car is sold I get an extra ?1000-?1500 then the nav is costing me ?300-?800 rather than ?1800, this affects MY decision to own this option because this is the true cost, I don't give a toss about the next owner (if I did my current car wouldn't have it's current spec

BTW I'll be probably be wasting my money on HUD & active cruise next time round, but I keep the cars 4 years so that also affects my decision on options, if I was swapping every two years I wouldn't bother with most options.

And the company car / fixed budget view...

I used HUD whilst I had a 530d loaner for a weekend and thought it was a real value add.
However, when ordering my company car, i.e. ordering against a fixed budget, its a matter of prioritising which options would bring ME the most. Having looked through the thread you see those members that have HUD "couldn't live with out it". I think that's the same with many options; in my case the M-Sport pack, Logic7, Xenons, Sunroof were absolutely must haves for me based upon previous cars I have had... which quickly leaves you with little budget to try out other pricey options. (I think if BMW had given me a fully loaded 5er for a month, I still would not have made my mind up what "I couldn't live with out"!! )

When ordering my next car, if I have the budget for another pricier option beyond my "must have list", I would most certainly try to squeeze in the HUD option.

I have just ordered a new facelifted 535d.

My options are: M Sport pack, full leather, heated seats, Comms package, lights package, electric side mirrors, rear electric blind, through loading, Spaeker system and tinted windows.

The question is: what about HUD? Is this worth ?900, or is it just a gadget that costs alot but doesn't get used?

Any views would be appreciated.
I am in my 2nd 530i (05' and 07') and had HUD in both - bottom line: get it and don't think twice about it - super cool, and super practical, period.

My Ride: 08 550 Carbon Sport Almost everything factory, but no sound upgrades.

Go for the HUD. Combined with NAV it is very useful.

Also, I have the Bamboo trim. Is very nice. The beauty of it is a bit subtle, but the more you view it the better it looks. It is combined with Carbon Black and natural tan interior.

I think they originally stated they would offer it with 3/2004 production cars but I think they ended up offering it with 2/2004 production cars...

I love this option. Only one problem, forced me to go buy a new pair of sunglasses since it is useless with polarized lenses.
