I was having trouble with my Business SatNav "not showing alphabet", "going blank" and also the iDrive being a bit slow. BMW have said they have installed a new MASK unit, I noticed when I got the car back that it was showing in KM which I have reverted it back to Miles. I thought the iDrive look will have changed with the parking sensors no longer showing complete blocks. ALso where it says BMW service centre, this does not contain any information.

I did also have problems with passenger restraint system faulty. My warranty has expired on the 28th June and in the last month I have logged the following issues, iDrive, Restraint system, delay from standing stop to quick getaway (not sure if this is fixed), SatNav. BMW have swapped out a occupancy sensor in the passenger seat. How long should BMW now extend these faults should they reoccur.

Someone else can probably give a better explaination but I think its the controls unit that controls much of the car communications system. European Cars without Professional Navigation and pre MY06 North American cars (pre March 2005 built) Without Nav use the MASK unit which is what doesnt support mp3 capability... whereas cars with Professional NAV and post MY06 cars all use the CCC unit now I think...

so basically the MASK was the old cheapie car communications control system BMW used on their cars now its all CCC.

Edit: Clearification on Post #6 and 7 see below.

The car is a June 2004 model with European Business SatNave, does that rule out bluetooth simple upgrade as well.....

my oct 03 build with bus nav does have bluetooth and plays MP3's - although, being the second owner, I dont know if extra modules were fitted post build.

I dont remember exactlly but seach around the site its been posted with details a while back. If I remember correctly it was Post March 2004 builds that can do a simple software upgrade to get Bluetooth. SO I think you're ok. But dont quote me on that run some searches and find the actual answer.

There are two computers on the E60. The CCC or the MAS-K.
No nav / Bus nav = MAS-K.
Nav pro = CCC.

Didnt they change it for North America and every E60 is using CCC now? Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh N/M you're right... they changed the Radio... all E60s in the US Post march 2005 use Professional Radio now and not Business radio.

Correct -- M-ASK (Multi-audio System Controller) (note the spelling of the abbreviation Iceman ) is for non-professional nav cars and CCC (Car Communications Computer) is for professional nav cars.

Damn!
What was I smokin'? I thought it looked funny this way. I should've known better, and previously had the spelling correct.
Interesting mistake I made, maybe I'm getting old...?
