I have an 08 550i sport. Love the car, only had it 6 months, really a solid auto. Not one complaint, until yesterday. Jumped on the freeway to run 50 miles south of where I live , wind was blowing 40 to 50 I thought this heavy beast would be glued to the road. Not the case , it really felt the wind,I wasn't expecting that. Then when a new outback blew by me I began to wonder. Must be this wide rubber, any thoughts? Glad I don't live in a wide open, flat, windy, part of the nation.

My car darts around when driving in crosswinds. It's not just your car or uncommon.

I get this a little too. in my case, I think the tires have a big influence. I notice it a lot on roads with dips/grooves so I am thinking the wider tires are catching part of it and pulling the car...

well, I live in a wide open, flat, windy, part of the nation and yes the wind catches sometimes but so does every other car. I have 275 rubber on back and 245 rubber on front and those are usually wider than any factory outback rubber, so i doubt it's the wider rubber on the car. My e39 does not handle this way at all but my E46 does hit the winds hard. I am convinced that the wheels have something to do with it. Before I put type 128's with a deep offset on the car it had a different aftermarket wheel which was a thin 5 spoke and my car handled completely different with and without wind. Bottom line is (and this my opinion) ANYTIME you switch wheels with different offsets you need to get the car re-ligned. Worked for me. I also think that active steering plays a part in the handling of my ride with the wind. To me it's not really something to worry about...and all of the above was written from a minimum of 80-85 MPH highway driving speed on each vehicle.
