excellent thread - key point for me from Grogan's post is the corroboration of the GT2's accuracy and thus confirmation that the sub 5 second 0-60 times Grogan, Znod and others have reported are accurate. I've never thought otherwise, but there have been posts here casting doubt on the quick times recorded with G-Meters - and here we have validation of their accuracy. In fact, it's tempted me to go out and get one, so assuming I do there may be some 550 times here soon!!!
Yea.

Thanks EBMCS03.I wonder if you could somehow run your IS350 against your 545.It would be a neat trick if you could.

I wouldnt want to. SMG doesnt have the fastest times... plus I've already ran HEAD to HEAD runs with brian in his 550 step with M6 wheels and we were pretty much even up to 80mph... and from 80 to 110 I think the 550 got ahead by half a car or so... to at most 3/4th cars length

Basically it was a drivers race... there was only once where we were able to nail it "at the same time" and it was DEAD even all the way to 60. me, just a tad over 3/8 tank of gas, with spare... brian, running on fumes, and prob with spare too.

That still surprises me as a former 545 owner who now has a 550, particularly as you have the SMG. My 550 is noticeably quicker than my 545 (at least it feels that way!!). If I recall correctly from Vegastrashed, Brians 550 was down on power due to a hole in the exhaust so he wasn't able to put down his best times or performances!

Hey EBMCS03 which car are you talking about against brian?I assumed it was your IS350.Swayjames seems to think it was your 545.

Hi g-man:

I am sorry to see you hang up your glove until you get new tires, but, yes, I agree that you have gotten what you can out of your car. I also agree with all you say above--except possibly one thing. The possible over correction that you mention seems to occur much more frequently when weather is much worse than standard as opposed to to much better than standard, yet there is no numerical bias in the corrections factors (i.e., they are symmetrical about standard conditions). So, assuming the symmetry I mention is appropriate, the possibility remains that our cars perform disproportionately better when the weather is sufficiently worse than standard--i.e., they lose less "noticeable" HP when when conditions are "a sufficient number of measurement units" to the bad side than they gain when weather conditions are "a sufficient number of measurement units" to the good side. In our scheme "a sufficient number of measurement units" is interpreted as a sufficient number of feet of density altitude.

Don't quit posting. We'd miss you.
I don't dispute your logic on weather corrections. You have done more research and analysis on the subject to qualify you as an expert. It is just that my best uncorrected run of 13.25 doesn't even make my top 5,and a 13.50 run turns out to be my best ever when corrected for weather.Sometimes fantasy on my part overrules logic.

I noticed this morning that my best time from friday is posted on "dragtimes.com".It is the fastest for a 545 on record.I will enjoy my little bit of immortality for now.I know I could lower that time with better tires and more drag strip practice but that will have to wait until at least next spring.

I know what you are talking about. Many of my best five passes are on bad weather days. Unfortunately, there are two explanations that we can't distinguish between. Still, I have never heard of others musing over whether bad weather conditions favor better adjusted times and speeds because of mathematical bias. The mathematics of weather and altitude adjustment seem to be well accepted. So, as said, unless this acceptance is ill founded, then our cars extra stout performances under bad weather conditions has to be the answer.

I have thought about why our cars, and BMW's, in general, might "over perform" under bad weather conditions. Consider this explanation. Let's say BMW wants to be thought of as having well-performing engine management systems. Also, let's say it want to minimize customers' perceived differences in hot versus cool weather performance. Third, let's say BMW wants a 325 HP/330 torque car in our cases.

So, why not set the engine management parameters so that a car's performance is biased towards better hot weather performance. Even if BMW does so, it still would be easy to meet its 325 HP/330 torque targets, customers would be happy with the minimized relative perceived performances differences, and BMW would be known for high HP/torquey engines and well-performing engine-management systems.

OK, so what's lost. Well, our cars are not managed so that they perform optimally in cold weather--although they still perform very well in cold weather. In this regard, it may not be possible, at this time, or BMW simply may be unwilling, for some reason (e.g., cost) to, install engine-management units that are able to fully optimize performance across the whole range of temperatures. If not, then BMW might chose to use the biased management scheme I am musing about.

Wow Grogan, it sounds like you had a ball. Interestingly enough, I'm planning on taking my car to the drag strip this weekend... I'm guessing you'd say it's worth the trip huh?
