Space for the center speaker if you have Logic 7 or the Individual Sound System. The 'button' is the interior temp sensor.

As usual Rudy, you are correct. But I actually meant its the thing that regulates the interior temp as well.

put something over it while driving in the sunshine and it get's warmer inside. As it turns up the airco when it senses sunshine coming through the glass and calculates that it should then get x degrees hotter in the car because of that and requires z extra cooling to keep it right.
doesn't always work though, so it also needs the inside temp sensor. for example in winter time, the sun can shine it but heat up less than in summer. i used to have a car that did not calculate with the two so temperature went up and down with shadow/sunlight.
next to it is, indeed, a speaker.
