We have style 116 with 225 wide..
It's a good combination, and it looks pretty nice!
The roads here in Denmark are usually wet, and between -5C to +5C...

We have Conti Winter Contact on our E60. I have been driving the E60 in very bad weather conditions (snow storm), and the tires was just great!
Still on summertires in Denmark right now, due to the high tempratures!

As pointed out, go with 17" in the OEM size. Pick up a used set of 138s (off a reg 530 not a XI cause those won't fit). Get a used set if you must - they are for winter.
There are two types of snow tires - performance and true snow/ice. Performance meaning they perform better in the dry than a standard snow tire. The best comparison is between the Blizzak LM-25 (perf) and the WS-50. The WS-50 will go through anything, the LM-25 is much better than an All Season, but nothing to write home about (but it will get you there). I would guess with your winters you go with a performance tire. I've had the Pirelli Winter 210P, Blizzak LM-22, and Dunlop M3s and the M3s are the best of those three. Of course all have been updated.
Recently Consumer Reports did a test of Winter performance tires. One of the top choices was the all season Nokians - yes all season. I've never heard a bad thing about those tires - except they are hard to find and you will pay more for them. Still they sound like an excellent tire.

The wheels from a 530i will not fit on a 530xi. They are either a different size or a different offset. The difference is related to the size of the hub on the xi I believe.
I went from a 530i to a 530xi and had to buy new wheels for winter.
