Good snow and ice tire+wheel combos?

My Ride: MY2007 530i, titanium silver, grey leather, steptronic, sport package, cold weather package, premium package, navigation, logic7 DSP audio.
The snow and subsequent ice in the Seattle area yesterday and today turned my 530i into a hockey puck. Could not go up or down on any slope and driving straight was a problem. Good thing the car has DTC.
The car came equipped with Dunlop SP Sport 01 DSST runflats in 245/40-18. I would like to get some snow tires and a new set of rims just for this kind of occasions. Since I have no experience with this sort of thing I thought I would ask for the advice of my fellow BMW owners.
I am thinking to go for the standard size of 225/50-17. Is this OK. Should I go for something even narrower? 16"?
I've spent some time looking at tires online and there are many choices out there, including:
- NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA 2, 3, or 5, RSi, WR
- MICHELIN Pilot Alpin PA2, or X-Ice
- DUNLOP Winter Sport M3 DSST, or Graspic DS-2
- BRIDGESTONE Blizzak WS-50. or LM-22
- CONTINENTAL ContiWinterContact TS790
- PIRELLI Winter 210 Sottozero RFT, or 210 Snowsport
Which ones are better for a 530i? Studs or no studs? If anyone has experience with any of these or other comparable tires please share.
What's people's experience with chains? Can they damage rims and the underside of the fenders?
Finally, I need some 17" rims. Where is the best place to get BMW OEMs? How about aftermarket? What are good rims for snowy/icy conditions?

IMHO, Tires with studs. only way you can get some grip on icy road....
Nokia or Continental.
Just move your summer rims to winter use. All OEM BMW (atleast in Europe) rims are nowdays suitable for winter use.. i think ?
I have 245/40 R18 Nokia Hakkapeliitta 4 and Rial Rims...

I got DUNLOP Winter Sport M3 DSST on BMW Style 116. Works very well. 225 wide.

Your standard wheels are 7.5 wide. You should not go wider to 8 inches for winter, just on principle. (Narrower tires put more pressure per square inch on the snow/ice, so better traction)
I'll probably end up using the same 116s as ipp.'
225 width you mention is for 7.5 inch rims, fyi, and you won't fit 16" diameter rims around your brakes.

My understanding of Seattle is that rain is more common than snow in winter.
If so, studded tyres are of little use.
A good all round winter tyre that has good wet and dry grip as well as snow and ice grip would be the way to go.
I have gone for Conti TS790v rated wintercontact, rated very highly in Europe. They suit a 'maritime' climate where the average temp in winter is between 3 and 8c and the roads are often damp or wet.
The snow and ice grip is plenty good enough for central europe as well

I have had the Dunlop Winter sport M3 on both my E60 and E61 on 17" Style 138 wheels that are offered as a package by BMWCA.
The tires are great in snow and acceptable on ice. We have a lot of bare and dry roads in the winter here so ride noise was a consideration for me.
You may do better price wise with a non BMW wheel.

My Ride: My ex-ride: EU '08 LCI 520dA. Space Grey, Sport Seats in Black Leather/Fabric Anthracite, Sport Steering Wheel, A/C with Extended Features, Hi-Fi Speakers, Cup Holders, Cruise with Braking function, Folding Rear Seats, Xenons, Park Distance Control.
Go for OEM wheels and 17" 225/50 17".
The German ADAC is a reliable tester and according to them go for

Just read a Nordic test about studded tyres, the best are:
- Nokian Hakkapeliitta5
- Continental ContiWinterViking2
- Bridgestone Norenza
The RF tyres of Nokian and Continental was good also but gave less comfort (of course).
PS. The studdless tyres ADAC test is for mid European winters.
If you have real winter, like in Scandinavia, then the best studdless winter tyre is Continantal ContiVikingContact3.
