Get a pre purchase inspection from a BMW specialist.

You should definitely purchase a third party warranty. I posted a thread a couple days ago about how my transmission was just replaced by the warranty, an $8,111 job!! And my car, an 06 530I just hit 70k miles. Had my valve cover gasket replaced as well with the warranty. My deductible was $250! That's it, not a penny more.

Here's a good guide to read to let you know what you're in for:

So You Just Bought an E60 (V1.6).... - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

There are several companies that offer 3rd party warranties. I have S-Guard, which was offered by my dealer (Not a BMW Dealer). It coveres 4 years, 50k additional miles, $100 deductible. Many swear by a Route 66 warranty. You can get it for $1,995 through PenFed credit union. You can join the credit union for $25 online ($5 in your account, $20 one-time donation to organization of your choice that supports military families). http://www.penfed.org

I have a 2008 535i, jet black, and have never experienced any chipping paint. I've never heard of the issue, but I'm very new to the BMW game, so I don't know a lot.

The one thing I DO know, is get a warranty. Period.

+1 on a BMW mechanical check. The warranty is expensive but it's one of those things that if you have a serious problem then you are very happy you have it, and if you have no problems you sit back and think damn, that was a lot of money... So, bottom line, you have to decide yourself. If I had purchased a warranty, I would be sitting here thinking I could have used that money some where else. Not all BMW's have issues but when they do the dealer prices for repairs are outrageous! If you are not mechanically incline, then you should seek out a reputable indy mechanic to care for the small things.

Awesome, very helpful replies from the forum, thanks to everyone.

Can i buy warranty directly or it has to be done via dealership? i am buying direct from the owner so not sure what are my options for warranty, any suggestion for the best warranty provider i should consider ?

also any idea on how much pre purchase inspection from a BMW specialist would cost ?

You can buy it directly from them. I have EasyCare, but depending on your state you might have other options as well. EasyCare has different levels of coverage, I bought the second level, which covers the motor, trans, brakes, cooling system and some other things. Also covers towing, rental car reimbursement and those things. Mine wasnt expensive at all and line I said it payed itself off with the first use! 8k in a new remanufactured trans and 600 in a new gasket!

Thanks, i believe any warranty wont cover oil change or any other normal wear and tear stuffs...

whats the best option for oil change ? i believe bmw dealership charges around $200 for oil change, cant we go to normal service centers advertising $20 for oil change ? is it different ?

i don't understand the difference getting oil change don at tire-plus VS BMW dealership

Please don't buy this car. It will soon need a full cooling system refresh, transmission and differential fluid changes, spark plugs, brakes, and the struts and lots of suspension bushings will need to be done, too. There will be other things - in the first 20,000 miles you own this car you will be spending money. It will be thousands, not covered by warranty.

And something else will go bad while you own it - could be HPFP, could be some of the injectors or coils. Whatever it is could be covered by a third party warranty, but it depends on the fine print in the one you buy.

If you buy this car, or any other BMW with similar mileage, you will be unhappy while you own it. You would be happier with an appliance car, something that will run forever as long as you keep oil in it. Toyota Camry, Mazda 6.

Good luck to you.

Oil capacity is ~ 6.9 qts of full synthetic plus the filter and the cost behind that is not cheap. You can take your car to somewhere like Jiffy Lube but you won't get an oil change for 20.00. It will cost you much more and most likely a high schooler on summer break will be performing this task. You should find a local shop that has knowledge with BMW's.
