I've got a 525d which is my first diesel car. However, all the other diesel cars I've experienced had a standard key turn ignition which could be turned all the way because you had to wait until the glo plug light went out. How does this work with the E60 diesels that have a stop/start button? It seems to start the car straight away without giving any time to do the magic with glo plugs.
I'm sure I've misunderstood something, grateful to anyone who could enlighten me. TIA

if its any help, i have never need the glo-plug pre-heat, just turn the key and it starts first time no matter how cold,
according to the manual the starter is spun 10 times and its not neccessary to hold the key, if it don`t start on the tenth spin only then is the glo-plug pre-heating needed.

I'm pretty sure it works with temperature. If its cold enough the car will warm the plugs before it turns over.

It's been pretty cold in the UK this last week but the cars always started to turn over as soon as I press this button which means there isn't enough delay for the glow plugs to work. I'll see what happens over the rest of winter as it gets colder but I did think this was strange.
