i am a 530 owner. I bought my car in october of 08. I WANT NOTHING MORE THAN THE BIG BOY. Get the 545, the extra power and options are always nice to have and you wont be like me wishing you got it!

ECU remapped by ZipTuning to 260+bhp.
If you're in Europe, consider a 530d or 535d.
The torque is simply amazing and with both cars you'll outrun an 530i easily.
If you go for chiptuning, you can get the 535d up to 336bhp / 710NM (524ft?lbs) reliably!
You'll easily outrun a 545i in a chipped 535d.

My Ride: 2005 BMW 545i, Titanium Silver. Bridgestone 760s on Weds Bavaria II 18" wheels, standard sport pack size. Sport, AT. Latest job - NGK Iridium IX plugs installed.
Think the biggest maintenance issue with the V8 is the spark plug replacement. I don't think the fact that it takes 2 more quarts of oil should be an issue, and any electrical problems should surface on both cars. The 545i is going to have more standard features than a 530i - it will be a good idea to check and download E60 brochures for both years and be familiar with the available features.
In terms of acceleration, it's no contest. I think the 545i is slightly more nose heavy, drive them both to see which you prefer. Whichever you decide, you will be driving one of the best handling sedans available.

Thanx to all for the advice. Looks like I'll go for the 545i. I've put aside a few bucks for a Dinan Stage 1 and I'm pretty sur I'll be a happy camper. Thax again.

Another vote for the 545 here.. I test drove a 530 prior to buying the 545. No comparison.
As others have said, electronics are electronics. And, most 545's are well-optioned, while 530s seem to be a bit more.... Spartan?
