I drive a 2004 model 525i M Sport.

Car is in for a service and the loaner is a 523i SE.

I always thought to myself 'glad i chose the 525 because its not as much of a guzzler as the 530 but faster than the base model \o/'

However after driving it it feels far far faster than i thought it would. Infact id say it wasnt much slower (if at all) than my car. Possibly even a little quicker in spots.

Does anyone know what hp engine would be in my 2004 525. I looked up the BM site and this years 523i has 177bhp which cant be as much.

Your 525 has 192 hp but both engines are 2.5 liters so the difference is not so big.
Your car must be a little faster though, especially at higher speeds. At normal driving you wont see the difference since they are both 2.5 liter engines.

I think the 525i used to have around 192bhp, but then got updated to 215ish - i also believe the 523 is still a 2.5i 6cyl engine

523i - 2.5i 6cyl 24v - 174BHP/230NM/8.5s/146mph
525i - 2.5i 6cyl 24c - 218BHP/250NM/7.5s/152mph

Also in gear acceleration -

523i 50-75mph in 4th - 9.4s
525i 50-75mph in 4th - 7.9s

^^All BMW Figures^^

Not sure when they updated to the 525i but i think it was around 6months-1year ago, so you might have the 192bhp one, which probably isn't all the different to the 523i.

Interestingly enough the Z4 2.5i appears to be the same engine as the 523i, and the Z4 2.5si looks likes its the same as the 525i

I think The X3 2.5i has the old 2.5 engine, with 192bhp/245nm, perhaps that's the engine you have?

174bhp in the current 523i and from 184bhp from yours... Perhaps the new engine has better torque characteristics? Sometimes outright power isn't everything for day-to-day driving (Thus why diesels are popular)

I had a 520i with 170bhp (M54 engine) and changed to a 523i (with the new N52 engine) producing 174bhp.

I've also driven a 525i with the 192bhp (m54) engine and the 523i felt smoother, quieter, reved more freely and felt as fast as the 525i. It made the 520i/525i M54 feel old tech. Although I only had the 520i for 10 months, the 523i test drive was enough to make me change.

Like yourself, I can't understand how the fairly small additional increase of 4bhp and 10nm made such a vast difference. Maybe BMW were holding back.

Your car I reckon has the 192bhp M54 in-line six.

The new N52 engines (from around March 2005) have the magnesium bits, valvetronic and probably other bits of magic to help move the game on.

Just looked in the Information section Info and The M54B25 engine is listed @ 184bhp/245Nm - pretty sure that is the 04/early 05 engine...

The 523i engine is listed @ 175bhp/230Nm... Perhaps the spread of torque is better or the lighter block really makes a difference!

Yes, your '04 525i engine is the M54B25 (184 hp in the US and 192 hp in Europe)
and the new 523i engine is a N52B23.
This engine is not available is the US.

Engines where updated in the March '05 production

After this update in US both 525i and the 530i are 3 litre engines.
In Europe the 525i still has a 2,5 litre engine.

A new N54 engine is on its way and the first one will be intruduced in the new
E92 coup? as 335Ci this summer/spring.

The new (3)35i engine is a 3 litre twinturbo with direct gasoline injection.
Later other DI engines will be also be introduced to the six-in-line family.

Some rumor says that a (3 and 5)28i engine will come...

After driving it a bit all i can say is that its very

very

very close in terms of performance

The only place i can see where it might be marginally slower (it feels like it hangs on a little) is at the very top of the rev band. Im not sure if i were to buy new if the difference would warrent the cash. Mind you i havnt driven the new 525 engine yet.

I don't think you would feel much of a difference at city driving as the figures of the 523 and the 525 is so close. So I am happy when BMW decided to release a new version of the 523i as I think this is the best 2.5L engines I have driven and it met all my needs.

525 is definitely faster when you are at highway speed but then again you would have to slow down for speed trap.
