So, is the tank capacity ~17.2 US gallons?
Capacity is 18.5 US gallons.

So how many gallons do you fill it up with?
I hope I won't repeat that anytime soon, glad my wife wasn't in the car or else she would freak if she sees anything less than 20 miles left, not even mentioning 0!
tell me about it my wife dose the same freak out when I go down to red line.

I always fill up after its reached the bar right after the middle bar. My dealer recommends it. After maybe 5 fill ups, do I run it to low, half way through the second to last bar. I've never risked the engine dying because of no gas.

I'm sure there's sediment at the bottom of the tank that doesn't play nice with the fuel injectors.
I see this written so many times, and to my mind it makes no sense.

Think about it.

The fuel pick up HAS to be in the bottom of the tank to pcik up the last bits of fuel, and it doesnt move from that position. So, even with a full tank, the fuel comes from the bottom, where any sediment might be....

Also, there is a filter in the system to prevent crap getting into the fuel system, which would be likely to damage the pump before it even got to the injectors.

The main issue running low, or out of fuel is lean running damaging the engine, or the hassle of getting the diesel to come through (bleed) after its run out. My current non bmw car has a hand bellows under the bonnet for priming fuel if you ever run out.

cheers

steve

Yes, I know. I've been good lately and will continue to do so. These days, I usually fill up with about 20 miles left on the indicator.
Not so bad for the engine, but rather for fuel pump. Fuel pumps are gas cooled, so if you are running low on gas, your fuel pump gets overheated really fast. And of course, if it fails, THEN damage to the engine can occur. Having said that, I do sometimes run as low as 10 miles and less!
