Don't smoke and get it inspected by dealer or qualified independent mechanic ASAP. Is it possible that at your last fill-up the pump jockey overfilled your tank? On a warm day a few drops of gasoline can create a heck of a lot of smell ... check the gas fill area and see if the smell is stronger there. If the cap was not tightened you would get an iDrive error. But gasoline spilled there would drain out ... but smell would remain.

Could be a minor leak but gasoline fumes are not something to fool with

That happened to me too, there was a leak in the end of the fuel rail. I replaced the fuel rail for 150$ did it myself, no biggie. I posted a DIY on it here somewhere if that is your problem.

Check your fuel injectors too. it took me a couple of months to find out, after replacing gas tank seals, fuel lines, rails, etc.,the fuel smell still kept coming in. my average mpg had shot up to 15mpg!

......yes, the leak was in the engine compartment, that does not mean that the smell cannot leak into the cabin. I too smelled gas in the cabin, then replaced the fuel rail and that fixed everything, don't be rude.
