I have been checking my MPG over the last couple of tanks, and I'm only getting 15 MPG.
I only have 1500 miles on the car, drive 75% of the time in D, not that hard, but I like to get on it now and again in DS.

On the highway my compter averages 19 MPG, in the city less then 12.

Does this seem right?

One other odd thing I notice, my MPG meter when slowing to a stop with the brakes applied will swing all the way to the right ( min. MPG ) then to the left at stop.

I have never seen this on any other BMW I have owned, is this normal on a 545, has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks in advance DR.Z

There must be something wrong with the meter or maybe the fuel pump. 12MPG on a 545i is at the low end. I get that if I do no highway driving and just go up and down the hill to my house from my work. (7 stops in 1.5 miles and a very steep climb.

The meter thing is right. It does the same in mine. as you get to a stop light it starts going higher and higher and it ends up all the way to the left while stopped.

I am getting 18.3 with somewhat hard driving around town (37mph average), with a definete heavy foot...

The 19 MPG highway in the computer is a bit misleading. The computer is using a rolling average, so that if you drive say 10 miles in the city at 17 mpg and then do 10 miles at 25 mpg on the highway, it will show you and overall mpg of 21 mpg. To get a more accurate picture of hwy mpg, you'll need to reset the computer just before you start the hwy component. Or better yet, next time you take a longer trip, fill up your tank and compute it the old fashioned way by filling up at the end and seeing how much gas you used.

i have a 530 and my average is 17.4 mpg in d and 16.9 in ds. 95% of the time is city driving. so yours is a 545 and the numbers look ok to me.

as far as the mpg meter, it's normal. same as my previous e39.

I reset mine regularly during different parts of a trip to see how I do on the highway or street.

I do this also. I usually get between 22 and 23 mpg. The only time I drop below 19 mpg is during autobahn driving when my average speed is above 110 mph. I have never had a tank as low as 15 mpg.

I don't think you can automatically assume the 545 gets worse gas mileage. We have a member at the meets that has a 525 and has never had a tank over 20 mpg.

agree but theoretically bigger engine means eat more gas, right ? but again, it all depends on the driving condition. i have less mpg just because i drive around city 95% of the time.

Sure in theory but power to weight must play a role too. I wonder if all 525's are getting such low numbers?
