I am in the Bay Are in Northern California... usually I stick to Shell and Chevron
but today in an emergency I filled up 76 (made by Conoco Phillips) I also looked at Aarco (made by BP)
But any suggestions?? of course 91 Octane and higher only!! Cannot find any higher here in Bay Area..
I lived in Chicago before and 93 was easily available...

Most places around here have 93 - I've always gone for that. Every now and then I'll need gas and the place will only have up to 91, which I'll usually but a few bucks in of.

Not really sure about the 91 to 93 difference, but I've never felt like it hurts to get the nicer stuff.

Now as for 76.... that just sounds scary. The minimum "Regular" around here anywhere is 87.

"76" is actually Union 76 - a gas station in the Bay Area (and most of California). I don't think the OP filled up with 76 octane.

+1 I'm sure you could NEVER find gas with THAT Octane rating!

Yes.. Union 76 is the Gas Brand... I never EVER fill anything below 91 in any of my cars... So I was asking about the brand of gas experience in quality.. Not the Octane.. that is pretty much determined for me 91 all the way!! Of course 93 if I can find it..

So what is your experience in filling up the below brands

Mobile
BP
Chevron
Shell
Union 76
Aarco
etc. etc.

I use Shell and Chevron in part because they both contain Techron to minimize carbon on the valves. I am retired at this time (I am too young to be this old!) I retired after 15 years as a Commercial Fleet Sales manager. Most of my customers would not use 76 or ARCO because of fouling and poor acceleration.

I hear the statement about using regular vs. 91 or better. Personally I find that hard to believe, I had a MY 2004 Lincoln LS Sport and tried regular in it. It was a frightening experience, on hard acceleration all 32 valves tried to commit Hari Kari.

Just an opinion!

76 is the name of the gas station (unical/Conoco Phillips) not the octane rating.

And in Cali the highest octane available is 91. you wont find 93 in the entire state.

Shell V Power is my only choice...

A distant second choice is Premium 93 Octane from Costco. I inquired and Shell and Exxon are the regular suppliers for Costco gas.
