Hi Folks,

Many of you are curious about the engine changes and here's what I've come up with. I believe this is the real deal, don't ask where the info came from.

The 525/530 will get the new i6 engines starting March 2005 production as a mid-year MY2005 change for customer deliveries to start in May 2005.

The 545 will be replaced by a 550 starting with MY2006 which would be August or September 2005 production. The new V8 engine will make around 350 hp and have massive torque. I personally doubt it'll be much slower than the new M5 and certaintly faster than the E39 M5.

Just FYI...

And you know who if you check this forum, hi

Interesting. The 550 will have been around for a year when it's time to replace my 545.

I wonder if the X3 will also get a mid-year update to the new I6's? The wife and I are looking to ED an X3 in late April next year and would love to have one of the new engines.

Oh no!

My not-yet-delivered 545i will be obsolete in a year? Oh well, 4.4 liter ain't bad, but 5.0 will definitely have that mystic bragging tone everytime you say it.

Well, it's kind of like getting a computer knowing that something faster and cheaper will comeout next month.

I'd surely wait if the time horizon was within 3 month, but not if it's 1 whole year and without authenticating the reliability of the info. But thanks for letting us know.

I found similar info on this GermanCarFans thread:

http://germancarfans.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=9722

To make this all clear...i heard very very good rumors that the 4.5 liter engine will be dropped and the 4.8 will be the new V8 in 2006! The new 7 facelift and engine will be in here as well as the 545i, i dont know what will happen with the x5 however

Now you really screwed things up. I'll be giving up my car (lease) in February of 06' and I'm already considering the M5, now you throw a wrench in the works with this gossip! A bit early to be thinking of my next car (thoroughly enjoying this one)........but I like looking forward to new toys.

What makes you think the 550 @ 350hp would be close to the 500hp M5?

What will the M5 be like in 06', 600hp?

Decisions decisions.......What a great country we live in

Allow me screw you up further

The E60 S65 M5 will have the V10 with 500 HP, that is the official BMW annoucement.

Interesting thou, that the S65 engine for the new M5 will be the "detuned" version. As the full power is unleashed on the E63 M6 with additional 82 HP. Same engine, exhaust and intake. Looks like the new M6 is the Munich's favorite child.

Yes, I heard the same thing about the new 550 info. I don't know where Lomag got his info, but given he is on the Great White North, I am SURE that we got our info from 2 different source.

cheers,

beewang

Hey beewang,

Welcome! Sorry to hi-jack my own thread but are you sure the E60 M5's engine is the S65? I got a reply from my UK contact who I asked about all the E60 engine codes (to update the engines gallery on the web site) and he told me it was the S85. Here's the list he e-mailed me:

520i = M54B22
525i = M54B25
525d = M57D25
530i = M54B30
530d = M57D30
535d = M57TU
545i = N62B44
M5 = S85

That M57TU for the 535d sound's wierd to me. perhaps TU for turbo? Everything else seems proper.

Lomag,
Thanx for the acknowledgement
Could be a typo by him. The V10 5.0 Litre Engine is known as S65 engine according to BMW Press Release.

You are correct about the TU. I understand that it is a Twin Turbo Diesel and it is ONE FAST Mother. Imagine a 545 that gets you 30~45 MPG

I understand that it BMW intends to bring that over to the US Market as a 48 state vehicle (Sorry CA and NY, until CARB losen up the pollution req for diesel, no car for you!)

Forget about what you know about the old diesel cars from the 70's and 80's (namely noise and mechanical problems). These new Diesel Super Saloon will blow you away!

cheers,

beewang

Yes I saw that too..:

"The new MS S65 engine management system uses the most powerful processors currently approved for use in automobiles."

However the actual engine block is called the S85 I think. I checked m5board.com and they say its S85 too. Not trying to disprove you but I'm going to update the engines gallery with the engine codes instead of the model numbers they're used on to have a complete gallery even when the old i6 etc engines are replaced and want to have accurate information posted.

Hmmm
