Is your car a diesel, I had this problem on my 04 525d, it went away though when it self combusted on my path destroying it, the fire started under seat!

i'd probably get the car to a dealership quickly. any smells like that coming from an automobile cannot be good.

I once had a rancid smell off rotten eggs in a 1983 Datsun Bluebird.

It turned out to be the battery. It was bubbling some strange chemical but once it was topped up with deionised water it was fine.

But I'm not sure if its the battery on the E60 because its in the boot?

Your combustion may be running rich and you are smelling excess gas in the exhaust??? I would take it to the dealership though, as stated above, any fumes that resemble gas are not so good.
