When high-pressure fuel pumps are malfunctioning or breaking, the car will generally jerk and sputter if you give it too much throttle - it can deliver enough fuel for idling and light throttle, but past that the delivery will be choppy and sporadic. Would be pretty jerky limping around like that.
As for the dealer response - that has zero chance of getting anyone any closer to resolving the problem... the car is still "broken" isn't it? Just hand them the car and tell them, "great Einstein... it's not the fuel pump then. You still have to tell me what's wrong with it... and fix it. Get to it!"

Well, at least it should be easier to diagnose now that it's totally dead. I'd rack that up to fluke... a defective part. Those really shouldn't be going bad, however I'd expect any competent mechanic to be able to recognize the symptoms of a failing pump on a test drive.
