Why is there not an option for a manual in the 535d?

This is what i thought. Getting my 530d done this week, when its finished it will have about the same performance as 535d. Its a manual! Just wondering what the long term effect will be on the box.

if you allow enough time for the engine and transmission to warm up after you start the car, then the difference in reliability will not be great... if you just mash the throttle, then its gonna go BOOOM

Rumour is that the engine has so much torque and they would have trouble finding a manual transmission that could handle that (with long term reliability that is).

Yep!
In standard form (not LCI model):
535d = Nm/rpm 560/2000
M5 = Nm/rpm 520/6100

Does the M5 have less torque than the 535d?

Although you could have a manual in conjunction with a 535d , a couple of wrong downshifts and your gearbox is toast
(and also on the new manual e60 m5... check some of the posts on m5board.com ... a couple of toasted trannies already)

Torque is possibly more useful that power in real world driving as you can mash the throttle in higher gears & still take-off (also due to the 535d being an Auto), however to make supersonic progress at certain speeds, an M5 driver would probably have to drop a cog or 2 (DMS on an M5 helps mid-range no end though). Saying that, dropping a cog & listening to that V10 blip about 1K rpm is so nice it's often better to play.
The 535d is a fabulous car though & it pushes the boundry of diesel cars to the max.
