Fuel mileage
Hey everyone I own a 05 530i with just about 82k miles on it. I had all six spark plugs and coils changed at the dealership when I bought the car.i get around 200 to 250 miles per tank on the car, and fill up every week. I noticed In the idrive i was only averaging 17.5mpg.
How accurate are the idrive readings? I usually do around 50/50 city/highway driving. I was wondering what many of you are getting? I feel like for a 3.0 i6 I'm not getting very good milage at all! I rarely drive the car hard... maybe once a month in the canyons. Please let me know you're thoughts this. |
While iDrive info is ok, you should manually calculate the MPG.
Every time you fill-up, write down the mileage and enter the number of gallons poured in. After 5 to 6 fill-ups, you can take the average. 17 is what I'd expect for city driving (with heavy stop and go traffic). Mixed driving, it should be around 22 to 23. How often do you check tire pressure? Tire pressure contributes to mileage. Do you carry lot of stuff in the trunk? :-) |
That math is not adding up. At 17.5mpg you would get about 325 miles per tank. Which is about what I average in all city driving, not exactly light footing it either. :-) I have manually calculated mine quite a few times and idrive has been if not right on, very close. Yes it is 6 cylinder, but remember it is a hi-po enginge caring a fairly large car.

Have the car read for any errors. Pull the plugs. Does it smoke? It has to be running like crap.

Always 91 octane or higher. |
I'd agree 200 -250 is abt 50 to 100 mi low. I use the trip meter and mycar app to track mpg etc. My wife (09 cts) and I (04 530i) only use costco premium (92 octane) so I agree w/91 or higher comment. I get well over 300 mi per tank..abt 330-350...mixed w/hwy always gets better longer results. I get 19-23 mpg but my foot and having sprint booster installed I know is reason for "my" lower mpgs.
We recently drove to spokane (300 mi) and was able to drive around city another 100 miles before fill up..hitting the trip reset button @400 and some change. ..the e60 is definitely a hwy beast!! On another note, I saw improvement on my previous e39 after replacing o2 sensors (both front/top sides), having done all other tune up points: spark plugs, air filter, oil change etc..also used costco prem |
