My Ride: MY2004 530d. Poverty spec
Default

My 2003/53 530d manual has averaged 39mpg (calculated) since I owned it (between 108000 and 135000 miles). Computer generally optimistic by 2-3mpg. My journeys mostly a 28 mile fastish A/B road commute. I just returned from a 1800 mile Europe drive through Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, and averaged pretty much the same.

I did notice that replacing run-flats with non-runflats seems to have hurt the average by 2mpg or so - more flex in sidewall means worse economy I suspect, and yes, the pressures are the same. However, given the vast improvement in ride and handling, I can live with that .

Well, I'm getting a consistent 44-46mpg on motorway runs (i.e. 90%ish motorway and 10%ish urban) which I think is amazing, when you consider my old Lexus IS220d (2.2 4Cyl/177BHP manual) was averaging 37mpg!

In town alone that drops to abou 25-27mpg, which again is excellent in my opinion. I find that in town you can get to 30+ IF you use the STronic mode and change up a little earlier, which on the LCI is just "flicking" like an SMG...

Love the car...

Hello all, my first post so please be gentle...just got an LCI 525d M Sport Auto (cracking car)!!

I know that there is a thread on consumption already, but it was nigh on impossible to track down consistent Diesel figures, so if no one objects, here is one specifically for the European guys - and oil burners!!

I haven't done the "at the pumps calculations", but the BC shows 46.3mpg for a 235 mile run, 85% motorway, running at the legal limit. How does that compare with what some of you guys get, and how inaccurate should I expect the BC to be?
I have a 525D Manual and on a motorway run it went to 715 miles on the range on a full tank, doing average speed. I normally get 550 on a full tank so show how it dropped by 150 miles when around town, mixed with a roads.

Mine is a 2008 520d. I'm averaging 43 mpg (6.5L/100km) according to OBC. My driving is mixed urban/national/motorway. Very impressive really.

My 520D Msport manual is currently showing 44.9mpg with 85% motorway.

Its also only done 150 miles so far & I'm hoping this figure will improve as the engine beds in.

My 525d LCI auto has averaged 40.3mpg over the last 24,000 miles. This is a mixture of motorway and urban drving with a fair amount of acceleration rather than excessive speed.

I tried driving really gently once on my way to work and got 45.5mpg on the computer.Fuel Economy - UK Diesels-2008_0118image0155.jpg

On the subject of the trip computer, these can be adjusted for accuracy which i have done on my own car. There are various threads here as to how to do it.

Prior to adjustment, mine was optimistic by about 3% if i remember correctly.

Regards and enjoy your car.

As I mentioned above, I had a Lexus IS220d. It wowed me in the showroom with all the standard toys, such as vetilated seat, DVD player, touch screen satnav, reversing camera (which I have to say was awesome) etc, but it didn't do the "driving thing" well at all. Poor gearing, loads of recalls, replacement emissions software and hardware, worsening MPG as the miles came on, choppy ride, road noise.... I got so fed up that I came across to BMW in the hope of efficiency and quality engineering. And I ain't disappointed!

So far so good. One month on and I'm loving the BMW more each day. It was the right move...and when you consider that this 3.0l Auto is 20% more efficient than a 4pot Lexus Manual diesel, much quicker etc it really says something about BMW engineering and their know how.

Well done BMW - and well done to this forum. Lots of help and advice...thanks guys!

PS - my LCI 525d M Sport Auto has only completed 5000 miles. Will the MPG, performance etc improve with miles? I'm hoping, but looking at hat the 520d guys are getting, I'm happy enough!

I reset the journey computer each trip I make for work, so I can claim the mileage back. This resets that MPG too, as a rule this is 49 MPG when I get back home. The vary from 30 to 400 miles, depending on where I go.

MPG has improved as the miles clock up.

I always use BP Ultimate, a few weeks back on a trip Cambridge, Bristol and back to Cambridge I filled up with the premium shell diesel. When I got home the journey computer was reading 42 MPG. Having done the trip a few times before I was surprised. Normally that would be an easy 49 MPG trip, nearly all motorway.

Have to admit, pretty chuffed really.
