I'm surprised at the great fuel economy of the 530xi. It is identical to the manual transmission E39 530i we have - despite being AWD and more power.
Drove from BOS -> NYC and trip computer reported 29.1 MPG at average speed of 72.1 mph.

Yea? 2004 530i. I'm at exactly 1/2 a tank of gas left and have gone 160 miles. So 320 miles a tank? Pretty horrible. =\

My readings where 6,6 l / 100 km but I did calculate it with the trip and the gas pump bill:
7,9 l / 100 km, some 12 % up f**k s**t creek (as the Blues Brothers used to say).

Sorry to say, but don't thrust the iDrive, it gives you too positive measurements.

Do it the old fashioned way. miles driven and fuel put in.

+1. BMW engineering is superb, but they can't calculate mpg for shit. Mine consistently reads 28 mpg when I am really getting about 22mpg. Granted the gas mileage is pretty impressive for the vehicles.

I have been to actual 6,3 l / 100 km (on a 1000 km period) by driving nicely only on highways... (brake in period).
The fact is that the wide Dunlop Maxx tires are like glue to the asphalt and are increasing the MPG (km/l),
as also only driving in the city and having the car to cool inside while smoking a cigarette before taking off.

In the movie "The Blues Brothers" when the Blues Brothers curse in front of the nun, (penguin), she hits them across the knuckles with a ruler!
