Hi Everyone
Can anyone help, new 535d sport delivered Dec 04, current mileage 2995, brilliant ride in every respect other tha fuel consumption, cannot get it over 26mpg driving carefully, the book indicates I should be getting 35mpg from mixed driving.
I am advised by the dealer that it should improve as the engine loosens up, the salesman has asked that I take the car in for an inspection if the situation has not improved by 5000 miles.
Your comments would be appreciated.
Richard

we have a 525 d with about 4000 miles on and we only get about 28.5 around town and about 34 on a good run well dissapointed in that ,the average miles to gallon on comp seems to take an age to change dont know what scale it works on, had a 1.9 tdi audi a4 prior to this and that did 44 in town and 56 on a run thinks i will be going back to audi next time not that inspired with bmw after all

Tony, there is a button to reset the average. It is the bottom button on the turn indicator stalk. If it is taking a long time to change the average, it may need resetting to see what you are currently averaging.

I calculate that your 26 mpg = 9,2 km/l (a part big mistake)
In my experience brilliant drive on town roads (DS gear) no more than 6,8 km/l.
In highway (D mode) 12-13 km/l
I was clever using manual sequential, supposing to have an egg under right foot, I reached 9-10 km/l in normal city driving.
My "old" stolen E60 530d was 18% better in high way and more than 20% better in town.

My 530d auto does about 29mpg town/average and will get 38mpg on longer runs,
i.e. london to glasgow at 80/90 mph.
I've had it average about 50mpg if I stick to 50mph (I did this while nursing a run flat tyre).
In general the mpg has been gradually improving over the 18K miles I've done so far in a year.

The engine will loosen up and things will improve but you should expect 30mpg on average driving. Only a long, steady drive will you see 40mpg.
30mpg for a car that can carry four in comfort and hit 155mph and get to 60mpg in a shade over 6secs isn't going bad!
It's a performance diesel - the manual 530d is motor to go for a marked reduction in consumption. The steptronic uses quite a bit more juice... (Not that you have another option in the 535d)
My steptronic only slips into 4th gear at about 32-33mph so it's worth speeding a little in 30mph zones to get the box to shift up I'm not condoning speeding mind

After 16,000m I consistently average 33-34mpg, mixed driving.
Not quite the 36.2mpg in the sales literature, but we all like to have a bit of fun with the right foot now and again, don't we?

9.4l/100 Km currently here, with 950km's on the odo. I find this to be pretty acceptable. In all fairness, this car isn't exactly a lightweight.
And I have been breaking it in pretty good.
With a more progressive right foot I could do 8.5-9.0 combined. The thing is though, you don't want to be more progressive, because that's the reason you bought a 535d instead of a 520i or 525d

I just drove 2500 km from Ireland to Hungary partly in snow storm average 105 km/h, 6,7 L/100km (35mpg). I had living accessories (sic) in car what I collected in 18 months, maybe 250kg. So when I have payload of four person in car doing 150/160 km/h on autobahn and spending some time in trafic jam, I think I have to be happy for rhis kind of consumption readings.
Skaffa
PS divide 235 with consumption reading to get mpg to l/km and opposite.

I have 535d 1300 miles and getting 32/34 mpg no problem with mixed driving longest journey approx 80 miles
On my last car I found switching off the air con had a dramatic effect on mpg don't see this with the 535d
do a reset on the journey computer on the idrive and test the vechicle over the next 200 miles to see the curent position
