Drove 30 odd miles on an A class road, traffic was a bit heavy and average speed was 50mph. Fuel consumption was 53.3mpg. Not bad. Reset computer and then did a dash up the motorway and set the cruise control at 85mph. 100 miles later my average fuel consumption was 45.5mpg.
Anyone else out there with a 520d getting the same / better?
What about 525d and 530d's? What sort of figures are you getting?

Overall average just over 30mpg I reckon...

Indeed - and all that extra torque! 41mpg could be better - I tend to put the gearbox in manual and force 6th. I find the gearbox doesn't like 6th even in D! (And tends to kick down to 5th too readily!)

I appreciate 500Nm for sure! Re the 41mpg ... I wonder if there's any difference in consumption between the E61 and the E60. There's a 100kg in weight cost for the E61 though I doubt that translates to much in terms of economy. I have to admit I'd not noticed the reluctance to use 6th ... unless the car's on a particle filter clean cycle! Maybe I'll try that on the next run (and try and keep my foot light on the gas )

However, I'm a little disappointed because I used to get 42mpg overall average in my manual 525d E39 (and sometimes 600 mile full tank range), but I guess the extra power and the auto box both have a negative impact. I'm beginning to wish I'd gone for a manual transmission again, just because I find it more involving to drive... maybe next time.

You guys don't love your country by paying more tax. Drive M5, consume more gas, and pay more tax for your country! We do it here all the time. That's why we love big SUVs , large displacement, etc.

Yup, it's the auto that saps fuel-consumption. However, I wouldn't go back to manual!

I just did my latest fillup's calculation - my last tank I saw the second-best mileage so far, a bit over 25mpg (US measure). That's my normal driving cycle too.

Yeah, we get ripped off here, it's so expensive, that's why diesels have become so popular in the UK, even though diesel fuel is actually more expensive to buy than unleaded petrol, you get more MPG. Tax on company cars is cheaper on Diesel models, as they (somehow) produce less emissions than petrol. The huge advance in diesel technology obviously has had a big effect on the sale of this type of car.
And it's these reasons I have bought a 525d Sport, from which I get about 35-45mpg, compared to 22-28mpg from my previous 02 Petrol Saab 9-5 Aero.
