I replaced all 4 tires in my 2005 530i last November due to the inspection failure. The rear 2 tires exposed the wire mesh inside the rubber due to bimmer's negative wheel camber. When tire guy took out the old tire, I did not see any pressure monitor device in the rim. How does our FTM work then ?

It uses sensors to monitor rotational mass, when that changes (due to loss of pressure) you get a warning. The sensor is not located on the wheel, that would be TPMS. I think it uses the ABS sensors but not 100% on that. That is why when you reset you should be rolling so that the sensor can get a baseline of the rotational mass of the wheels/tires and set accordingly.

Thanks. The warning came up on Tuesday in highway after work. I checked tire pressure after car sat overnight. The left front tire was 30 while others were 34. I pumped air to left front tire to 34 psi. Need to jack up the front this weekend to look for any nail or screw. Also reset the FTMS with engine running.

From the Owners Manual - available on line in the information section of this forum ....

http://www.5series.n...s_Manual_US.pdf

Flat Tire Monitor - The concept
The Flat Tire Monitor keeps track of the inflation pressures in the four mounted tires as you drive. The system provides an alert whenever the inflation pressure drops significantly in relation to the pressure in another tire. In the event of a pressure loss, the rolling radius and therefore the rotation speed of the wheels change. This change is detected and is reported as a flat tire.

This is all true, but in later years they changed it to the individual sensors that you were looking for.
I think that the change was either 2007 or 2008??

Yep, TPMS is an LCI feature, meaning it was made std in 2008 model year cars.
