Because the taillight assembly is completely open. There is not weather sealing on the trunk/boot side of the assembly. If a spider managed to crawl in through the trunk air flaps and find its way to 'light' it would crawl to the tail light.

I have the exact same problem. I watched the little bugger make a web in mine.
