Don't generalize... I've hardly turned off DSC or found the need to. I think I've done it maybe a total of 3 times in almost 4 years. Its preference for some people and have nothing to do with the size of the engine.

I'm glad no one was hurt!

My 545 had 18k when I got it, now at 26k. I have been turning off DTC numerious times when moving and in drive but have only held the button down to turn off DSC a handfull of times. I'm not sure if I swtich into D or DS before pressing the button but I've never had this issue. Although one time I had the transmission slam (sudden downshift from 3rd to 1st) which actually spun the wheels as I was in the process of pressing the throttle.

Get it checked out ASAP!

Left windows auto up + DTC + trottle + shifting park to DS = fastest 0-60 time in your e60

Actually I have tried several more times since last night and it hasn't happened again.
Taking her in on Monday to get it checked out.

Now for the DTC question, I've only had the car about a month so I'm trying all the stuff (well a lot) I read here, DS, manual mode, DTC partially off, completely off. I'm just trying to get to know the car, so far, except for the crap last night, I am very happy and very impressed. I came from an Expedition that ran for 7 years before my mechanic told me it needs a new engine, so this is a big change.

I'm sure I'll eventually find a mode that suits me best but I gotta try everything to know what I like.
