but the dealer should know about it, and he should know about how and where in the software he can activate it. There he can also see if it is activated allready.

Find details here. It was a post I raised back in April. Its got the whole history of how I finally managed to get Brake Force Display (BFD) activated on my November 2003 built E60.

Hope it helps. Page 4 of the post is the most helpful bit.
All cars built in 2003 will have the BFD feature deactivated due to EU laws, unless you were in the US then its been activated. All cars built in 2004 will have BFD activated as standard.

Mine's a Dec 2003 and I always presumed it was disabled. Next time the car is in I'll get them to check...
