I really want/need fold-down rear seats but when I got the E60 I didn't get that option. Would BMW sell me the spare seats somehow? Or maybe they have some from parts-recovery from accidents? (which wouldn't be unlikely since most total loss accidents involve mostly damage in the front and the frame)
Of course then I'd have to get them installed...
If anyone have any information or comments regarding obtaining the seats and/or the installation, it would be much appreciated!

Somewhere there is a thread on retrofitting the fold-down rear seats. I seem to remember that it would not be an easy "bolt-on" type of upgrade because the metal divider between the trunk and the passenger compartment has to be cut.
It may not be worth it to you unless you are willing to spend some serious cash...

A quick search did not reveal the thread you mentioned ... was it on this board?
I need it most to carry hockey sticks and windsurf sails/masks, but I might have to come up with some kind of roof-rack contraption instead if the cost is that prohibitive.

Sorry but before I posted above, I tried to quickly find the thread and had no luck. I'm sure it was on this board though...
Do you have the ski bag? That may be an easier retrofit -- it should at least handle the hockey sticks but I'm not sure the dimensions of the windsurfing gear...

not sure about this.
but on fitting various parts to my car a fixed seat e60 2004.i realised that the rear seat back is a one piece affair and only held in place by 2 locking latches under the parcel shelf, then bolts at the base from the ionside of the car.each bottom corner inside car has a primitive catchment semi hinged by a wireand hook arrangement.
i assumed the seatback from inside the boot was a solid frame back for rigidity etc.but this is completely a void area.hence. from a wreck car you could with all necessary fitting possibly fit split foldownm seats.possibly expensive and upholstry matching would be a problem.
metal wise there appears to be no phisical structure difference.
perhaps someone has done this already as the cars are now a couple of years old parts should be about.

As Rudy mentioned earlier if it can be done ....the ski bag optioin may be the easier choice. See this for the parts needed by courtesy of the ever knowledgeable Rudy. http://forums.e60.net/index.php?show...258&hl=ski+bag

IMO the fold-down seat option should be standard. Any other "lesser" can comes with the option as standard.
For me, it's essential.
