Ok, so I've tried searching and now I'm really confused.

Flat Tire Monitor - no sensor in wheel (Typically 04-05 545i)

Tire Monitoring System - sensor in wheel

I have a 2006 550i sport with a build date of 1/2006. 3 of my valve caps are metal and one is a black plastic. Which system do I have??

Thanks

My E60 530i does not work off the valves, it works off the ABS wheel speed sensors. When pressure is lost the rolling radius of the wheel is smaller ie more revolutions hence showing a fault.

Depends on the year, but it is not the CAP, but the Valve stem it self If it is a longer Metal one you have the TPMS system and that would require a set of sensors if you get a second set of Wheels....

I think model year 06 is a tpm system that uses the ABS, but 07 -09 use the TPMS system. You might want to do a search on it. TPMS....

I'll chime in... I have a 2006 530i and it has the TPM system (no intelligence in the wheels - it watches the ABS sensor to determine if the wheel is changing RPM).

That's likely what you have, too.

Cheers!

Still confused.....no intelligence in the wheels = FTM (Flat Tire Monitor, ABS sensors)

TPMS = Tire Pressure Monitor System (sensors in the wheels....)

I'll just ask the dealer the next time I'm there....
