HI all
Just finished a quick FYI dealing with a P1434 error. Not that bad. Based on the forum posts, seemed like the DTL pump or mass air sensor were the culprits. No it wasn't the gas cap.
So I decided to replace the DTL pump for fun, which is located under the right (passenge side) rear wheel well. I was pleased to hear there were many in stock at the dealer. Ah. Just take the tire off and remove the well liner. You'll need a star wrench and little bit of silicon for one of the air hose fittings. Its not a hard job, just spend time thinking of how to remove things. I recommend you unloosen all hoses from the clips and unscrew the hoses connected to pump so the pump unit hangs down for removal. The pump costs like a $170 and you might ask for three extra star screws that afix the pump to a bracket. These strip and are a pain to tighten.
Anyway, the Service Engine Soon SES will remain on unless you can clear the code. So I went off to the BMW dealer for a $65 check of the codes. They came back saying the DTL was bad and the mass flow was going. I told them I replaced the DTL and to please clear the codes to see if the SES stays off. According to SA, the mass flow was giving intermitent faults so maybe this expensive unit will last a little while longer. I may get some special cleaner down the road.
Dealer was cool. But if your not cheap like me, you could be talked into a $1000+ repair. The mass flow is over $450 just for the unit. I think your adding 1 hour of labor to this.
No SES. Very happy to avoid such a bill and some info to save others some money.
Sorry for not taking pics.
Now I need the courage to change the tranny oil.

Try cleaning the mass airflow sensor but use only MAF cleaner which is available at most part stores.

BTW. The pump can be had cheaper at Pelican parts. $100 as opposed to the $160 I paid.
