Hi All Had my first mishap with my UK spec 520i 2003 manual. On Tues of this week my car was booked in for amongst other things a problem with the handbrake ie; on very steep hills it would not hold the car still. also on some occasions when I applied the handbrake I got a loud crunching noise from the mechanism and it felt as if something had broken but then would work ok on the next use. A new lever was diagnosed by the dealer to be fitted a week on Fri. Today I visited a friend only to come out later and find my car a further 25ft down the street and hard up against a lampost. Grrrr...
The question now is could this have been due to the faulty handbrake and how do you prove it. OR for the first time in years and years by sheer coincidence I did not apply the handbrake as when I got to the car it was in the off position
I do not think so as it is something you automatically do without thinking but again how do I prove it?....my word against theirs. Anyone here heard of a problem with the hand brake or (parking brake) for my American friends.?
Anyway it can be fixed and thankfully it only hit the lampost and not another car or worse.

How come you dont leave it in gear? Even in the instruction manual it says to leave it in gear and the hand brake is just used as a suppliment not as the only thing to old a car in place. It'll be a hard argument.

Ouch! and scary!
You don't note it in your signature, but I assume you have the manual transmission and left it in neutral. Damage doesn't appear too bad, luckily there wasn't anyone else involved.

Really sorry to read and even worse to see you mishap MAK.
Too many people do not use the handbrake at all.
If one doesn't use it, it will not hold, because the pads will rust and
eventually at car inspection all the moving parts has to be renewed.
I got a note from my local carinsector with my E39 about this.
Guys, use the handbrake everytime you park you car!

Just a footnote to the above ....... the estimate for the repair to the damage is ?1050 They are going to fit a new bumper. Was wondering if I should get them to colour code the black section at the bottom. Does anyone have this done so I can see how it would look or I would be glad of you're opinions... What do you think??
Thanks
Thanks

That would be very nice but somehow I do'nt think the insurance company will go for it. Anyway it would just give them another excuse to raise the premiums.
Cheers!

Leave it in gear if you are parking on slopes and turn your steering wheels towards the curb if you know that there's problem with your handbrake. Even if there's no problem you should do that, that's what they teach when you get your driver's license.
