Earlier this year, BMW announced their diesel offerings for the U.S. market. The 335d sedan and the X5 xDrive35d SAV, sharing the same 3.0-liter, twin-turbo diesel engine delivering 265 hp and 425 lb-ft torque, were unveiled in January.

More recently, BMW announced the fourth generation of iDrive, a hard drive-based unit called the CIC (Car Infotainment System). The CIC replaces the CCC (Car Communication Computer), a less sophisticated system that?s been around with some enhancements since the launch of the 2004 5er Series. The original iDrive was unveiled in 2001 for the 2002 7er Series.

But what cars will get the new iDrive? Rumors on the inclusion of the new (CIC) iDrive on the 5er and 6er Series have been swirling around the blogosphere for months; go to any BMW forum and you?ll see countless posts on this very same issue. Add in the question of the timing of the official launch for the 335d and X5 xDrive35d in the United States and you have tens of thousands of posts on these topics, all playing a guessing game, often with posters telling themselves what they want to hear.

Nice...

The 2009 5er and 6er Series will not be arriving this fall with the CIC...

...Despite the appearance of photos of a 5er Series interior with the new iDrive on several BMW-related blogs (according to BMW NA, there are a few 5er Series test vehicles out there with it) and a cryptic mention on www.bmw.de, Germany and other markets won’t see a 5er or 6er Series with the new iDrive either.
...

...This could change at some point in 2009 but for now, purchasers of the 5er and 6er Series will have to content themselves with the superb handling and performance of these cars minus the latest and greatest cockpit controller."...

Thank you for the sharing the info, nice write up (as usual)

Good update Jonathan, thanks.

I'm still waiting for the TTV8 in a 6er. Will take old or new iDrive to go with. Soon as your insider connections can scoop that out I'll take that info to the order machine

Thanks Jonathan,

Looks like no changes in 2009 for the E60 , but we should expect a surprise package upgrade / option change mid year, especially if sales slow.

Love my 2008 .

rsyed-

I would be more inclined to agree with your statement. I was just looking at the latest 5er brochure (http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicle...roduction.html) on the BMW Global website and noticed these things:

1) On page 6, the second drive slot that is for the Navigation DVD is missing. Suggesting that the Navigation is hard disc based, and I believe the CIC has a hard disc system.

2) On page 12, there is a picture and description of the new i-Drive control. Also pointing in the direction of the new 5er having the new CIC i-Drive system.

3) On page 13, there is a picture and description of the Navigation System Professional and it states that there is a (as in single) DVD drive and a hard disc based navigation. Isn't the CIC i-Drive system (including navigation) hard disc based?

Perhaps U.S. bound cars are going to get the old CCC system? I don't know, but from what I see in the latest global (excluding North America) brochure, it looks like 'rysed' is correct in the fact that the CIC system will be available on the 2009 5er sooner than later.

In the UK BMW Car Magazine said that the 5 and 6 series would get the new iDrive in Nov 08.

Look for this update around March of 2009; thats usually when BMW does these kinds of updates.
