But no, I disagree. I happen to disagree with the entire established system of car sales, because it basically is set up to waste people's money to the max. I bet, if not for the costs that dealers add (not even talking about situations where they bluntly overcharge people), all cars would cost about 20-30% less, after all said and done.
Sure, dealers can make a buck. But catching a guy for 6-7 grand on a 10K net transaction...
I just bought my 2007 550i on Tuesday. It has Nav, Sport, Comfort, Cold, Sunshade, Premium on it. It has 45k miles. I got it for 28.5, it is not a CPO car (had it checked my local BMW shop). I just picked up a BMW Platinum Warranty for 6/100 from the BMW dealer up the street which covers more then the CPO warranty for $3400. Total cost of the car 33k with a warranty that goes for another 2.5+ years and 53k miles.

The warranty is directly though BMW. I went to see a SA at my local BMW shop, he printed out the service rerods from car and at the bottom was the list of warranties my car was available for as well as their cost. I saw the 6/100 Platinum plan for 3400 and bought it on the spot with the help of the finance manager.

My Ride: '07 550i with SP, Nav, Logic7
This doesn't sound like a good deal. However, the OP failed to mention that his TL-S has been in an accident (not showing up on Carfax report yet).

Once the accident report shows up you'll lose money big time.

There are before and after pics on that site. I'll let the pics speak for themselves. The car is covered by a full factory warranty w/ a clean title. But not everyone can handle cosmetic damage that's been replaced.

My Ride: 2005 BMW 545i
Everyone is ragging on this deal but I actually think it isn't bad. $30.5k is only $1-2K above auction prices and if you can get that at a dealer then that's not too shabby IMO. It's the TTL that makes the deal look like a killer.
Also, $20k for the TL Type-S isn't a bad trade-in value, I've seen worse, MUCH worse. The dealer knows it's convenient for the buyer to trade it in on the spot. It's a smart business move since a lot of people take huge losses on their cars by trading in for convenience reasons. I think you should try to sell the car on the private market and then use that towards the 550i.
It's sad to think that the majority of people who own E60s and don't visit this forum get ripped off to the max. Most people don't do their homework but gj OP for doing it and consulting the experts here.
As for aftermarket warranty, I highly recommend Mercury Platinum. It costs roughly $3,000 for an additional 4 years and 50k miles. I've used it for repairs at BMW dealerships with no problems whatsoever.

I need this car gone ASAP. Goes to the dealer Friday. Car was in an accident earlier this year (all pics are on this site), damage was strictly cosmetic. It was fixed up and now looks BETTER THAN NEW. The paint is perfect. No dings, dents, anything. This car WILL outshine the 2010 cars on the road.
