My take on it: the maintenance/running costs of 355 will be much higher. the reliability of the 355 will not be as good. I think the biggest factor is whether the car will be a daily driver or not. I wouldn't want the 355 for a daily driver...the M5 would be the pick for that hands down. If it is a daily driver, the M5...if not the 355. Oh... and let me offer sympathy for the difficult decision you are facing...

The F355 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Unfortunately it is also one of the least reliable and most difficult to maintain F cars ever built which is saying a lot. Why not look for something in between the two. You can get a Porsche 996 Twin Turbo for less $$ than either car. It has super car performance, looks and is reliable enough to drive daily.

Let's see...
I assume for $80k you are looking at a late 90s F355? If so, you will get no xenons, no CD player, no automatic climate control, no heated seats, no bluetooth, no airbags (maybe), no adaptive headlights, no TPMS, no DSC, no controls on the steering wheel, and no heated steering wheel.
If this will be a weekend car, then none of that is really important, and all would be outweighed by the thrill of owning a 4-R-E. If you plan to drive it more than once a month, I would get the M5.
I would consider in that price range a Maserati as well, as you can find much newer ones (with Ferrari engines, no less) and more modern amenities for that price point.

Well I recently visited the closest ferrari dealership in my area to get some more insight and i walked in only to see some georgous 360s and f430s the 360s were going for 180-200k range pre owned very low miles mint condition ... the f430s wayyyy out of my range ... be as it may the 360s require the same maintenance as the 355s they need all new belts every 15,000 miles the cost of the full service is 5 grand .... the new f430s do not need this as they are chain cams like our BMWS.
well
Ferrari sound awsome , look better , Hell i f i was paying that much i would drive her about 500 mi per month except january - march in nyc ....
the 360s lease numbers are 20k down 3200 p/m with 5000k mi p/y lol well well see in spring time mabey the home equity line is looking better and better as interest rates are going down he he ... IM SINGLE !!
