My Ride: 2004 545i titanium grey 6 speed manual with light grey interior. Nav, L7, cold weather, sport, sat. Modifications: suede headliner, pianno black interior trim, Ipod dock, Mtech front bumper, Angel Eyes, and flat black kidney grills.
Unhappy

Anytime the key in in the ignition position there is a loud vent noise from the front passenger floor area. I looked into it and there is an air intake tube that bends 90 and goes thru the firewall. I did a test and the air that gets sucked into this hole comes out thru the air vents in the dash. This noise is very loud with the engine off but still noticeable while driving. Does anyone know what purpose this air intake serves? I do not want to plug it up but am considering a switch to manually turn it off and or adding a tube to relocate the air intake to a better insulated part of the car to reduce the noise. I think bmw had to make a 90 bend at the last minute to allow the white plastic module bracket to fit which partially blocks the air intake tube.

Do you have the air recirculation set to open, closed, or automatic?

I do not know. Is that what it is? Cool. All I need to do is turn that thing off. The main problem is that if I want to sit in my car with the engine off and listen to the stereo the air suction noise creates a noise floor that is much higher than anything in the audio system so it is hard to tune it out in my mind.

I think that you are right, I believe it is the air recirculation that is making the noise. The only problem is I can not shut it off from idrive. I looked thru all the menu and the closest I could find is the steering wheel button selection as ( star or diamond ) for air recalculation on/off. I selected that hot key but the steering wheel button does not shut it off or even respond with a confirmation of some sort. All the other climate and info menu screens do not even mention air recirculation. I did find parked car operation but my idrive does not let me check the box. My E60 545i build date is 01/04 and I have the current software version ( or at least the updated software has been updated recently.

If ever there was a reason to use the smiley, this would be it...

Here's a little hint, depending on the year of your car, see if you can find a button that looks like one of the following:

2008 model:
Name: LCI.JPG
Views: 139
Size: 1.7 KB

pre-2008 model:
Name: pre_LCI.JPG
Views: 155
Size: 1.7 KB

Once you find the button, you'll know what to look for when you so you can learn to set it properly...

So what's the difference between the recirculation with the "A" and without?

And if he turns the recirculation off the noise will go away?

Recirc with A is what BMW calls an Active recirc, meaning that the air is recirculated through some sort of carbon filter before entering your cabin.

It's funny, I was looking into this issue last night, was driving me nuts until I figured it out!

The previous posts are right on.

In I-Drive (Climate) you can also set the intensity of the air flow. At MAX the air noise can be quite loud.
