I've 3 months left on my factory 4 year warranty, with only 30k miles on the clock of my 2008 535XiT touring. I bought the car when it was only 9month old, with only 4k on the clock.
I had the 4 year extended factory warranty on our previous car, a 2001 X5 3.0i, which saved us over $5k for the $1,600 it cost, so I'd like to get the same for our 535XiT. The dealer here in Chicago has quoted me over $5k for the 3 year warranty (the max time they say), which is crazy egregious. Our car has had lots of small things go wrong, so I may have to go for a 3rd party (non factory) warranty.
Has the price of these warranties really gone up that much or are they ripping me off? Do they check the reliability of the car, and take that into account?
I've heard these warranties are negotiable, and I'd like to know what others have paid for their factory warranty (and the model), or which non-factory extended warranty you have, whether you recommend it, and what it costs.
Thanks in advance for your help and advise.

Try easy care, you can call around to different non BMW dealers like Acura and independent auto sales for competitive pricing.

Dealer let me see his internal price sheet and it prices the extented BMW warrenty a little different depending upon the engine. Due to electronics in our cars, I've had many tell me to buy the BMW plan that extends 2 years and another 50K covering exactly what the OEM did. My 2008 550I sport cost me $3900 , I went for the Maintence plan for another $2450 as I drive 25K a year. ( if you drive more than 12K a year, it will pay for itself ) Because I bought both, he charged me a flat $5900 .

This extended program will cover everything to 100K or 2 more years and transferrable. A-arm bushings go around 80K, water pumps at 70K , possible transmission issues are all covered . If the nav system goes, that's a quick 2 to 3 Grand , I have heads up and that to is expensive to replace. Any 5 series and above has more electronics than the lower models and they are expensive. The days of just mechanical problems are not what I'm insuring against. This is my 4 BMW , and I drove all above 150K to a high of 263K , This 2008 already has 55K. I drive my car to enjoy why I bought a BMW , Mechanical problems I can fix, electronics, I must defer to the dealer.

Am new here and will only relate to what I can recall as being reliable info. I am looking to purchase an extended warranty on my 2008 535 with 27K miles, and need to decide by May 2011, since the OE warranty expires 3 mos. later. That said, the 3rd party warranties are such that I would probably stay away from. Does anyone have any very recent info on having purchased from the dealer? I did take a look at BMW's website a few weeks back for info, but as I recall there was no mention of pricing [which now i see why}.
thanks...
thanks...

I am also considering the factory ext. warranty. My warranty will run out in July and thinking of holding on to my car until the new M5 is out. From experience, i rather pay a little more than to mess with some of the third parties out there, I know that each third party is different but let me give you an example. We bought extended warranty from a third party for my wife's Toyota minivan. We had to repair the power sliding door, dealer submitted a claim to third party: Denied!!! This BS went back and forth for 3 month, finally I told the dealer that sold me the third party that I want a full refund. Then they got Toyota involved, anyways, Toyota felt bad and ending up doing a goodwill repair, bill was $1800.00. Not too long after that car needed repaid again, denied again. Had to get their senior management to get it approved. I am not saying that every third party warranty is like this, but who really want or need the headaches. The original warranty is great and don't mind paying a little more for it to continue. Just my experience...
